MI Black History: Voting Rights Rejected

Q: When did Michiganders vote on (and reject) voting rights for black residents?

A: 1850. A ballot issue to give “Equal Suffrage to Col’d Persons” failed when 71 percent of voters said no. The measure even failed in Detroit, which had been a center of support for abolition and the Underground Railroad.
