MI Black History: He Had a Dream

Q: At which Michigan event did the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. try out his “I Have a Dream” speech?

A: The “Walk to Freedom” march in Detroit, held on June 23, 1963. It was the nation’s largest civil rights event to date, though it would soon be overshadowed by King’s March on Washington two months later. At the Detroit event, King delivered an early version of his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, which he would famously deliver at the Washington event.
