#MIHistory – March 20: Michigan’s Public Schools

On this day in 1837, Gov. Stevens T. Mason signed a comprehensive school plan for the new state of Michigan that set up a system of free schools. Today, Michigan has 1.54 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms. Ensuring that each of these students gets the absolute best education possible has always been a top priority of the Michigan House Democrats, and we’ve fought for better and fairer education funding, better ongoing training for teachers and for programs that ensure that kids with special needs aren’t left behind.
